Getting started

Learning to drive is one of the most exciting skills you'll ever learn. Whether you're just thinking about starting lessons or you've already got your provisional licence, this guide will help you know what to expect.

Don't worry if you've never sat behind the wheel before—everyone starts somewhere, and your instructor will guide you every step of the way.

1

Apply for your provisional license

Before you can take driving lessons on public roads, you'll need a provisional driving licence.

You can apply online through the GOV.UK website if you:

  • Are at least 15 years and 9 months old.

  • Can read a number plate from 20 metres.

  • Meet the medical requirements for driving.

2

Book your first lesson

Your first lesson is all about getting comfortable.

Your instructor will:

  • Introduce themselves and explain how the lesson will work.

  • Adjust your seat, mirrors and steering wheel.

  • Explain the car's controls.

  • Teach you how to move off and stop safely.

  • Answer any questions you have.

There's no expectation that you'll know anything before your first lesson.

3

What shoud I bring?

For your first lesson, remember to bring:

✅ Your provisional driving licence

✅ Comfortable shoes with thin soles

✅ Glasses or contact lenses if you need them for driving

✅ A bottle of water (especially during warmer weather)

Most importantly...

😊 Bring a positive attitude! Mistakes are completely normal and are one of the best ways to learn.
